Dog Pregnancy Scan Ceredigion

Canine Ultrasound is the best method for pregnancy detection in dogs

Confirm pregnancy so you can accurately take care of your bitches nutritional needs and plan accordingly for an estimated litter size

An canine ultrasound scan is the most accurate and least stressful method to confirm pregnancy; it is best performed at around 4 weeks gestation.

What to expect...

We use a top of the range Sonoscape veterinary grade scanner that shows clear images and from which we can give you a good idea of numbers and estimated due date if the time of mating is in question.

We keep stress levels of your pet to a minimum. You are encouraged to stay with them whilst we scan and they can stand, sit or lay down during the process, whichever they feel most comfortable. There is no need to shave them or withhold food prior to the scan. We will take the time to talk you through what we are seeing on the screen and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

In the case of a canine pregnancy scan, we can give you an idea of litter size, however ultrasound is primarily for diagnosis of pregnancy and due to resorption and/or crowding, numbers seen at the scan are not definitive.

We can provide you with images of the scan via email, WhatsApp etc so you can relive the scan experience, share with friends and advertise your upcoming new arrivals.

A follow up canine pregnancy ultrasound scan can be very useful if there are a small number of pups, if problems have been encountered in previous pregnancies (resorption etc) or if you would just like to see the puppies again.

We have extensive experience in scanning dogs, cats, sheep, goats, rabbits and ferrets. Ultrasound scanning can be performed at our clinic or in the comfort of your own home (please email or call for details).

Frequently Asked Questions

DOG PREGNANCY SCAN CEREDIGION

How long after mating can you ultrasound scan my dog?

For a dog ultrasound scan, we recommend 28 days from ovulation or last mating (if unsure of ovulation date).

Whilst we are able to tell if a dog is pregnant sooner, 28 days is the best time to avoid a future rescan. If you would like your bitch scanned sooner for a specific reason, please let us know the reason when booking.

Can you tell me how many puppies she will have?

We can certainly tell you how many puppies we can see and give you an idea on numbers. However, a canine ultrasound scan is primarily for confirmation of pregnancy and any numbers given are a guide on litter size, not definitive. Resorption can occur as late as day 45 of pregnancy, so resulting in a fewer number of puppies at whelping than seen i the original ultrasound scan. Conversely, in larger litters foetal vesicles become crowded and can ‘hide’ behind on another, making counting difficult.

Do you scan goats/sheep?

Yes, we scan smaller herds/flocks of goats and sheep. We recommend scanning between 45 and 90 days after breeding in order to get the best estimate on number of foetus present.
